NeoGenesis for Radiation Dermatitis
Patient: D.N.
Condition Treated: Burns from Proton Radiation Treatment for:
- New Breast Cancer-Intraductal Carcinoma in the left breast following Mastectomy (2017);
- Reoccurrence after 16 years of Breast Cancer-Intraductal Carcinoma in the right breast tissue (2017); and
- Treatment of Axillary Lymph Nodes on right and left.
A total of 33 treatments of proton radiation were received between Aug 2017 and Sept 2017. As noted above, this was her second bout with breast cancer. The first occurred in 2001 and was also Intraductal Carcinoma in the right breast. She underwent two lumpectomies followed by a mastectomy and four rounds of chemotherapy.
Other Products Used Prior to NeoGenesis: DN was provided with Aquaphor healing ointment for use from the Proton Center. As her skin became more burned she applied Walgreens Sensitive Skin Aloe Vera After Sun Gel to soothe her skin. There was more burned skin over the weeks of treatment, so the doctor added Walgreens Pain Relieving Gel (Topical Analgesic with Lidocaine and Menthol). Cetaphil moisturizing cream was also added as an alternative after a few weeks for the Aquaphor.
NeoGenesis Products Used: Recovery (30ml spray) / Intensive Moisturizer / Moisturizing Mist
Patient Feedback:
Introduction and Day 1:
My skin was sore to the touch and as can be seen in the Day 1 picture. It is burned in what, I think, are varying levels of first degree burns. “I felt very crispy. I put Recovery on last night and wanted to see if it worked. After 8-10 hours, I didn’t have to put any Lidocaine or Neosporin on. It felt so good, I did not want to put other products on. After one application, I can tell you I have not felt this kind of relief from any other products. I was convinced and began Day 2.”
My pain level was only at a 3 once my burned skin began to peel. There should be a discomfort scale which would be a better description of how my skin felt, particularly when clothing rubbed on my skin or there was skin to skin contact – this I would put at 5. Naturally, if I forgot to sleep on my back, I might wake up with a discomfort level higher to 7 or 8.
Day 7:
I began using the NeoGenesis products on September 26 starting with Recovery that was applied twice per day (AM and PM). At that time I was also using Silver Nitrate prescription cream on those spots that were raw/highly irritated as my skin peeled from the radiation. On Tuesday, October 3, I received two additional products from Geralyn: Moisturizing Mist and Intensive Moisturizer, as well as, a larger supply of the Recovery. As of that Tuesday, NeoGenesis products are the only ones I used that week. The Recovery is still being applied in AM and PM, with the Intensive Moisturizer applied one hour later in AM and PM and the Moisturizing Mist used midday only. As you can see in the pictures, I have significantly more healing of the raw spots and peeling in general. My level at this point is a 1, with a varying discomfort level of 4 and less. My skin was still very sensitive to touch and to any clothing that rubbed, but was significantly better than week 1. Loose fitting clothing worked well as this point.
Day 14:
No change in protocol this last week. No silver nitrate used this week at all. Pain level was now zero. Discomfort still existed, but only when clothing rubbed against my skin. Discomfort at this point was either a 1 or 2. Skin that has healed was not sensitive to the touch, only the areas that were raw or those that had peeled and not completely healed. Tighter fitting clothing was now better so there was no rubbing on either the peeled or partially healed skin areas.
